In a first-of-its-kind opportunity, the Iowa Newspaper Association is partnering with Iowa State University and Drake University to launch the Walt Potter Digital Ambassadors Program in Iowa. The program provides newspapers with on-site digital expertise to enhance their online presence and audience engagement.

The program originated in Missouri, where Walt Potter Jr. partnered with the University of Missouri to help local newspapers manage their social media accounts. After the program had success at the University of Missouri, the Iowa Newspaper Association was invited to launch it as a pilot program for students this upcoming winter break.

During this program, students will be receiving real-world experience on everything digital in the journalism world; Students will be taking on projects such as content creation, managing social media pages, and helping newspapers with whatever tasks they may need assistance with.

You'll help Iowa news organizations launch social media accounts and strategies, create digital content or experiment with new technologies. You will work in-person in their newsroom Jan. 5-9, 2026. You will receive a $1,500 stipend, and RJI will cover the costs of your lodging. The deadline to apply is September 22, 2025 We will notify students of their acceptance by October 10. There will be mandatory training for accepted students on Friday, Dec. 12 held virtually.
