Gone Cold

Gone Cold: Exploring Iowa's unsolved murders is a year-long collaborative effort by Iowa newspapers to revisit some of the most brutal and mystifying homicides in Iowa's history.

On July 26, 2015 Iowa newspapers began sharing with their readers information about many of the 438 unsolved homicides in Iowa's history. It is our hope that by sharing these stories with a broader audience, justice will come for some of these victims.

A case goes “cold” when law enforcement no longer has any clues on which to follow up. A case could go cold weeks, months or even years after the death. And a case may be reopened if new evidence is introduced. There is no statute of limitations on murder.

Following the initial launch articles, there are small space, templated boxes available that highlight a different case each week.

The series is free to any Iowa Newspaper Association member newspaper.  We encourage newspapers to localize the series. If you have a cold case in your area, dust it off and run a story about it as part of the series. If you do create original material, please send it to INA’s Communications Director Cicely Gordon at cgordon@inanews.com. The INA will make it available to other newspapers. While we encourage making the series your own, localizing it and adding to it, we do ask that you not change the series name, Gone Cold: Exploring Iowa’s unsolved murders.  Iowa newspapers have the potential to make a great impact on the state with this project and we want to maintain its identity.

All tips will be directed to local law enforcement or the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI). However, if you learn that evidence has surfaced in a case as the result of this project, please let the INA know.

Our thanks to the following people who have been working for months on this project: Amalie Nash, Des Moines Register; Mike Schlesinger and Jeff Hutton, Marshalltown Times Republican; Dave Stanley, New Hampton Tribune and Nancy Newhoff and Jeff Reintz, Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier.
