General Assignment/Features Writer. Award-winning and independent family owned daily newspaper in western Iowa is looking for a self-motivated reporter to write features and general-assignment stories on an array of topics. The Carroll Daily Times Herald — operated by the same family since 1929 — earned the Iowa Newspaper Association’s 2012 Newspaper Of The Year Award. The newspaper covers a wide geographic area in west-central Iowa, turf which is often overlooked by other media, giving enterprising reporters endless opportunities to break interesting and thoughtful stories. We don’t micromanage writers. Want to practice journalism the old-fashioned way working with a family that knows and loves its community, a newspaper where writers write, without corporate politics and structure? This could be the place for you — whether you are an ambitious newcomer or a veteran of a larger, downsized daily looking to land at a newspaper that’s not afraid to tackle big stories and carries a statewide reputation. Our family of newspapers, Herald Publishing Company, also includes the Adair County Free Press, Fontanelle Observer, Guthrie Center Times, Guthrie County Vedette, Lake Panorama Times and Jefferson Bee & Herald. This position would involve some limited work with the Jefferson Herald, and the potential for assignments with other newspapers in the operation. Salary is commensurate with talent and experience. We will pay for talent. Please email resume, references, cover letter and 5 to 10 clips or writing samples to firstname.lastname@example.org. Application material may also be mailed to: Douglas Burns, Carroll Daily Times Herald, 508 N. Court St., Carroll, Iowa, 51401. 0503
