Karen Spurgeon

Karen Spurgeon

Publisher, Bloomfield Democrat

Professional background:
Karen began her newspaper career in the fall of 2004 after spending 39 years in the music education profession. Needing to fill the void left by retirement, she went to work for The Bloomfield Democrat, which she and her husband, Publisher Gary Spurgeon, owned. The reporting, editing, and bookkeeping skills she began to learn at that time were vital in continuing the family business with son Scott after Gary?s death in August of 2013. Gary?s passion for community journalism was contagious, and Karen and Scott were determined to ?pick up the pieces? and move forward. A good newspaper that keeps its readers informed and prods its citizens into action is vital to the success of any community, and in memory of Gary Spurgeon, The Bloomfield Democrat is continuing to fulfill that role.
